Tip Tuesday — Read Outside Your Genre

It’s important for a writer to READ. Like ALL THE FREAKING TIME. And you should vary what you read. Don’t just read the genres you write and love the most. Branch out and challenge yourself to read outside your comfort zone. Fiction, non-fiction, creative non-fiction, short stories, essays, micro fiction, poetry. Read it all. And read in different genres too. Mystery, romance, YA, contemp, horror, dystopian, LGBTQ, free verse, rhyming, humorous, etc.

A well-read writer is a well-written author. You learn different things when your reading reaches far. You learn what you like and what you don’t like, what works for you and what doesn’t and you can also discover some things that you will want to try in your own writing.

Adding greater variety to your reading list is great for stretching and growing your own writing technique and style.
